Description
At the Chapelle des Pénitents Bleus, the Trame(s) exhibition brings together four artists exploring contemporary textiles. Spanning themes of memory, the body, healing and heritage, discover original works that blend embroidery, sculpture and recycled materials.
The Chapelle des Pénitents Bleus is hosting Trame(s), an exhibition dedicated to the myriad possibilities offered by textiles in contemporary art. Four artists are taking over this heritage site in La Ciotat with works that explore, in particular, memory, the body, intimacy, transmission and healing.
Through a wide variety of techniques and materials, the exhibition reveals the full richness of textiles as a means of artistic expression. Threads, fabrics, gauze, wadding, canvas and recycled materials are transformed into sculptures, embroidered compositions and installations of varying sizes.
Marie Bérenger explores, in particular, the relationship between textiles and personal memories by working with nightwear and the intimate sphere. Anne Bothuon has developed a unique sculptural practice: her life-size figures take shape through the assembly of sewn-together wadding and tarlatan gauze. Aurélia Jaubert creates large embroidered murals from joined pieces of canvas, whilst Valérie Leydet, an artist from La Ciotat, combines recycled fabrics, wire mesh and cardboard to evoke memory and reconstruction.
The exhibition thus presents four artistic sensibilities and four ways of engaging with the material. From intimate works to large-scale creations, Trame(s) invites visitors to take a fresh look at textiles and their place in contemporary art.
The exhibition is open to all and visitors are free to explore it at their own pace, as they make their way through the various works on display in the chapel. Workshops for school groups are also available to help younger visitors become familiar with contemporary art and textile techniques.
