La Ciotat is marking the 50th anniversary of André Malraux’s death with the Décade Malraux. A programme dedicated to heritage, literature, cinema, music and the passing on of knowledge.

La Ciotat celebrates the Malraux Year 2026 To mark the fiftieth anniversary of André Malraux’s death, the town of La Ciotat is joining the national initiative 2026, Malraux Year, launched by the Ministry of Culture. This participation forms part of the town’s cultural and heritage policy, which is based on the preservation of heritage, the transmission of knowledge and ensuring access to culture for as many people as possible. The Malraux Decade: a tribute to Malraux’s cultural legacy La Ciotat is hosting the Malraux Decade, a nationally recognised event forming part of the André Malraux 50th anniversary celebrations in 2026–2027. Organised by the town of La Ciotat in partnership with the André Malraux Endowment Fund and the Horizons Malraux association, with the participation of the municipalities of Ceyreste and Roquefort-la-Bédoule, this event pays tribute to the many facets of André Malraux: writer, member of the Resistance, statesman, Minister for Culture, committed intellectual and defender of heritage. The choice of La Ciotat is particularly fitting given the richness of its historical, maritime, industrial and cinematic heritage. The town is actively working to preserve and promote this heritage through its application for the Town and Region of Art and History designation, as well as the creation of a site of outstanding heritage. A programme combining heritage, culture and knowledge-sharing The Malraux Decade offers a multidisciplinary programme that brings together heritage, literature, cinema, music, exploration and knowledge-sharing. Talks, screenings, exhibitions and a variety of cultural events will provide an opportunity to discover or rediscover the personality, work and commitments of André Malraux. A national day of reflection will also bring together cultural figures, experts, researchers and elected representatives to discuss contemporary challenges relating to the preservation, restoration and transmission of heritage. This discussion will echo the initiatives undertaken in La Ciotat to better understand, protect and promote its heritage. A special focus on young people The event places great emphasis on passing on knowledge and raising awareness amongst younger generations. The various activities on offer will encourage young people to discover André Malraux’s legacy, gain access to culture and learn about heritage. Through this programme, the Malraux Decade aims to foster a dialogue between memory, creativity and the future, introducing new generations to the values and commitments that shaped the life of this great figure of French culture. A cultural event to promote La Ciotat As well as paying tribute to André Malraux, the Décade Malraux helps to promote La Ciotat’s cultural influence and showcase its heritage. This national event provides an opportunity to highlight the region’s cultural richness and to emphasise the importance of preserving and passing on our heritage to future generations.
