Description
The town of La Ciotat invites you to discover an exceptional exhibition dedicated to the world of Ernest Pignon-Ernest, a leading figure in contemporary art, and to his unique interpretation of André Malraux.
For over 50 years, Ernest Pignon-Ernest has been developing a profoundly humanist body of work, at the crossroads of art, history and memory. Through some one hundred works – original drawings in various formats – the artist invites us to delve into his imagination, where the figure of André Malraux occupies a central place.
A politician, artist and great humanist, Malraux is revealed here in a new light. Surrounding his portrait are numerous figures who have left their mark on history, literature, poetry, politics or the collective memory. Some crossed his path; others never met him. Yet, in Ernest Pignon-Ernest’s imagination, they all share an affinity of spirit, culture, history or spirituality.
Through these imaginary encounters, the portraits become bridges between eras and generations. The artist creates a dialogue between the living and the departed, the real and the imaginary, revealing the full power of art to bring the past back to life in the present.
The exhibition will bring together the artist’s iconic works as well as previously unseen drawings, never before shown at his recent exhibitions in 2026. This is a unique opportunity to discover or rediscover the richness of his work and the depth of his perspective on André Malraux.
To extend this immersive experience, the chapel will host a sensitive and immersive exhibition, combining displayed artworks, books and a continuous film screening exploring the artist’s work and creative drive.
