Description
A timeless artist … When shipyards inspire art.
With the exhibition “Born of Steel”, the GAM association invites you to rediscover the work of Gilbert Ganteaume.
From 7 August to 5 September, Tuesday to Saturday, 10.00–13.00 and 16.00–20.00, Chapelle des Pénitents Bleus (closed on 15 August).
“Born in the heart of the Chantiers Navals shipyard, Gilbert discovered wood and metalwork at a very young age. During his apprenticeship, he learnt the techniques and skills that would have a lasting impact on his artistic journey. Cutting, welding, assembling and shaping materials: these techniques would go on to fuel his creative imagination and become the hallmark of his work.
A painter, sculptor and tireless experimenter, Gilbert has developed a personal artistic language over the years. His work is distinguished by the use of varied materials, often repurposed from their original function.
But Gilbert is also a man of conviction. His humanist and progressive beliefs permeate many of his works, which bear witness to them.
“Born of Steel” also highlights his visionary nature. Always in search of innovation, he has ceaselessly explored new techniques and pushed the boundaries between painting, sculpture and assemblage.
“Born of Steel”… a journey into the industrial, social and cultural heritage of La Ciotat.
An exhibition not to be missed if you wish to understand how the steel from the shipyards could, in the hands of a visionary artist, become a material for dreaming, creating and passing on.” Dominique Payen.
