A little corner of Greece in the heart of La Ciotat.
After six years in the heart of La Ciotat’s historic centre with Chymos à l’Essentiel, a local organic grocery shop, a new venture has been launched: Chymos La Taverne.
Stéphane Zounias is of Greek descent on his father’s side and, before founding Chymos, worked as a chef for over eighteen years. This tavern therefore represents a true return to his roots: a return to his origins, but also to his first profession, the one that has always fascinated him.
It all began in the spring of 2025, during a stay in Chania, Crete. Sitting by the old harbour, he watched the tavernas lining the quays. Families were laughing, friends were sharing meals, plates were being passed from table to table, and everyone was taking the time to enjoy life. Couples seemed even more in love, as if the gentle Greek way of life had brought time to a standstill.
A simple, warm and authentic atmosphere emanated from every terrace.
At that moment, an idea struck him as obvious: Why not carve out a little piece of Greece and bring it to La Ciotat?
He then asked himself another question: if this relaxed way of life exists over there, why couldn’t it find a home here, in the historic centre of La Ciotat?
And so Chymos La Taverne was born.
Stéphane didn’t simply want to open a Greek restaurant. He wanted to offer everyone, for the duration of a meal, the feeling of being on holiday in Greece.
To introduce people to that relaxed way of life that had touched him so deeply – where people take the time to live, to share, to laugh, and where couples seem even more in love.
On the menu, you’ll find gyros, souvlaki, mezze to share, vegetarian options, the unmissable Greek salad, octopus, traditional desserts, as well as the great classics of Greek cuisine such as moussaka, pastitsio and spanakopita… and many other specialities to discover.
The meats are carefully marinated, the recipes are inspired by Greek traditions, and the focus is on simple, generous and authentic cuisine.
This tavern is deliberately intimate.
It’s a cosy, intimate venue where we take the time to welcome every guest with care. As Chymos La Taverne’s motto says: A small room, just a few tables… lots of love, Greek-style.
