The Route des Crêtes is free!

Every Sunday of the year

Every Sunday, the legendary Route des Crêtes between Cassis and La Ciotat returns to its calm. Closed to motorised vehicles (cars, motorbikes…), it becomes the ideal playground for walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. A unique opportunity to discover – or rediscover – the breathtaking panoramas of Cap Canaille and the Mediterranean, in the soothing silence of nature.

From the top of some of the highest cliffs in Europe, the route reveals an imposing spectacle. Usually travelled by many cars a day, for one day a week it is open to those who choose soft mobility.

The scheme, devised by the towns of Cassis and La Ciotat in collaboration with the Parc national des Calanques, also helps to preserve the local wildlife: less noise, less pollution, more serenity.

Climbing the Route des Crêtes by bike is a real challenge! With its steep gradients (an average of 8% over 5 km) and its sometimes playful wind, the climb requires stamina… (intermediate to difficult level).

For walkers, there are a number of footpaths along the road that take in the unspoilt countryside. The emblematic route links the Bec de l’Aigle semaphore to Cap Canaille, dotted with natural lookouts and spectacular viewpoints. (Duration: 3 to 4 hours round trip)
