  • For La Ciotat, 2025 marks an important anniversary: 130 years of cinema.

  • La Ciotat, the cradle of cinema, saw the birth in 1895 of the seventh art from its visionary fathers, the Lumière brothers, and with the gentleness of a mother, the town cradled it in the setting of its luminous landscapes, offering its unique backdrop to the many films that have seen it blossom on the silver screen.

La Ciotat, the cradle of cinema, saw the birth in 1895 of the seventh art from its visionary fathers, the Lumière brothers, and with the gentleness of a mother, the town cradled it in the setting of its luminous landscapes, offering its unique backdrop to the many films that have seen it blossom on the silver screen.

Since its creation, the 7th art has developed on the basis of the previous six major arts. Cinema created an enriching dialogue that opened up new perspectives between these different artistic disciplines. Not content with simply depicting pictorial or sculptural works, it also appropriated their visual language to enrich its own aesthetic grammar. In this way, painting and sculpture profoundly inspire the way in which filmmakers compose their images, stage their bodies and organise the rhythm of their narratives.

To celebrate this special anniversary, this exhibition, created entirely by your Micro-Folie mediators, highlights the inspirations drawn from the fine arts by film-makers, sometimes obvious, sometimes more subtle. When art meets cinema, the 7th art form appropriates its visual language to enrich its own aesthetic grammar and sublimate the works on the big screen, much to the delight of viewers.
