  • The circumstances surrounding the decision to construct a new building for the Town Hall: it was thanks to the arrival of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie on 10 September 1860 for the launch of the liner Le Provence, renamed L'Impératrice, that Antoine Chabaud, mayor of La Ciotat, obtained approval for the project. The Town Hall was inaugurated on 7 May 1864 in the presence of the Prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône, Monsieur De Maupas.

    Its architect was François Augustin Martin, known as Auguste, the departmental architect (who designed many buildings in Marseille). The building is in the Second Empire neo-Renaissance style and is notable for its eight-sided tower inspired by the Tower of the Winds in Athens, with eight sides decorated with sculptures personifying the prevailing winds in La Ciotat. And the history of the town hall until its relocation and the installation of the museum.
