From her early days working with pastels to her swirling paintings of today, Julie's work still has the same power, still features the same bold juxtapositions of colours rendered unreal by her dizzying conception of movement.
The pastelised, suspended moment of yesteryear has become, with the brush, a tilt, a vertigo, a fall and a rush. Like a gust of wind that carries away the bodies of her subjects, bringing them before our eyes. As a scenographer, Julie Mertzweiller has always approached spaces, universes, characters and dramaturgy by drawing and painting while reading texts, prior to designing sets and costumes.
And then one day, several years ago now, she began to paint, to create her own worlds; her characters are seated, waiting, looking or moving, running, departing, in motion! Alive!
