    Rognac June 1999 :

An original, a nullity! Such was the description given to Vincent Van Gogh by his peers. Despite this, he proved to us through his work, his hard work and his thirst for success that he was a man with a big heart and an immense talent.

Life's disappointments and the love he wanted to give to those around him, to no avail, led him to take refuge in painting. He found his subjects in his everyday environment, and his talent transformed a pair of clogs found on a rubbish tip into a remarkable masterpiece.

Through my reproductions, in which I have invested myself, which make up this exhibition, I wish to be an accomplice to this humble man, who throughout his life was misunderstood, repressed, shunned, a hated genius, a social suicide.

The choice of subject for all my reproductions is not the result of a meticulous calculation or a structured decision, but of a particular and intuitive attraction.

Once the drawing has been completed and executed with precision, all that remains is to find the right colours, the right serif and the right direction for the lines. It's a fascinating experience in which what might seem easy is not always, in fact, obvious.

What's interesting for me is that my friend Georges Autran and I have brought together some forty works, including some little-known canvases, in one place, to share and make accessible to everyone some of the works of this great painter, Vincent Van Gogh.
